About this notice
This California Privacy Notice supplements our Privacy Policy and explains, in the format required under the California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”), what personal information Startup Muslim collects, why, and what rights California residents have over that information. We extend the same rights described here to all visitors and subscribers, regardless of location. Capitalized terms not defined here have the meaning given in our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.
Categories of personal information we collect
In the preceding 12 months, we have collected the following categories of personal information:
- Identifiers: name and email address, collected when you subscribe to our newsletter via Beehiiv or submit a form, including Submit Your Story, Nominate a Founder, or general contact.
- Submission content: any details you voluntarily provide in a story submission or founder nomination, which may include company information, business details, or personal background shared for the purpose of being featured.
- Internet or network activity: technical information such as IP address, browser type, device type, and pages visited, collected automatically through standard server logs and, if enabled, analytics tools. [Confirm and name any analytics or advertising tools in use, e.g. Google Analytics, and update this line accordingly.]
We do not collect Sensitive Personal Information as defined under the CCPA, such as government ID numbers, precise geolocation, racial or ethnic origin, religious beliefs beyond what a Submission may voluntarily disclose, health information, or biometric data, except where a founder or contributor voluntarily includes such details in a story Submission intended for publication.
Sources of personal information
- Directly from you, when you subscribe, submit a form, or email us.
- Automatically, through your interaction with the Site, including server logs, cookies, and analytics if enabled.
- From our service providers, such as Beehiiv, which processes newsletter subscriptions on our behalf.
Purposes for collecting personal information
- To deliver our newsletter and manage subscriptions.
- To review, edit, and, where appropriate, publish story submissions and founder nominations.
- To respond to inquiries sent to us directly.
- To maintain, secure, and improve the Site.
- To share aggregated or anonymized metrics, or limited individual data under confidentiality obligations, with potential investors or acquirers during fundraising or business due diligence.
Categories of third parties we disclose personal information to
- Service providers: Beehiiv for newsletter delivery and our website hosting provider, who process data solely to perform services on our behalf.
- Potential investors or acquirers: for due diligence purposes, generally limited to aggregated metrics and, where individual data is required, only under a signed confidentiality agreement.
- Legal and regulatory authorities: where required by law or to protect our rights, users, or the public.
We do not sell Personal Information, and we do not share Personal Information for purposes of cross-context behavioral advertising.
Your CCPA rights
If you are a California resident, and as a matter of practice, regardless of where you live, you have the right to:
- Know: what personal information we have collected about you, including the categories and purposes described above.
- Request deletion: of personal information we have collected about you, subject to certain legal exceptions.
- Correct: inaccurate personal information we hold about you.
- Opt out: of the sale or sharing of personal information. As noted above, we do not currently sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. If this changes, we will update this notice and provide an opt-out mechanism.
- Non-discrimination: we will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.
How to exercise your rights
To make a request, email us at salam@startupmuslim.com with a description of the right you wish to exercise and enough information for us to verify your identity, at minimum, your name and the email address associated with your request. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law.
You may also designate an authorized agent to submit a request on your behalf, provided we can verify both your identity and the agent’s authorization.
Changes to this notice
We may update this California Privacy Notice from time to time. The “last updated” date at the top reflects the most recent revision. We will not collect new categories of personal information or use existing personal information for materially different purposes without updating this notice.
