Indian space technology company Pixxel has raised $100 million in Series C funding, in a round led by Temasek and Seraphim Space, as it moves beyond satellite imaging toward building a broader space data and Earth intelligence platform.

The round also saw participation from new investors 360 ONE Asset and IMM Investment, alongside existing backers Radical Ventures and growX ventures. The investment brings Pixxel’s total funding to $195 million, making it the largest funding round raised by a space technology company in India to date. 

Founded by Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal, Pixxel began with an ambitious idea while the two were still students at BITS Pilani. Today, the company operates a commercial hyperspectral satellite constellation and is expanding into Earth intelligence software, satellite manufacturing and sovereign space systems. 

Two Students With an Unreasonable Idea

Ahmed and Khandelwal met while studying at BITS Pilani and shared a fascination with space and engineering. Before Pixxel, Ahmed was part of Team Hyperloop India, which became a national finalist in the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition and was invited to SpaceX’s headquarters. That experience helped push him toward building technology for the space sector. The pair founded Pixxel in 2019 around a problem they believed was being overlooked: conventional satellite imagery could show what was happening on Earth’s surface, but often could not reveal the deeper information contained in different wavelengths of light.

Their answer was hyperspectral imaging.

Rather than capturing imagery across a limited number of spectral bands, hyperspectral satellites collect information across a much broader portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. This enables the detection of characteristics and changes that may not be visible in conventional satellite imagery.

From Satellites to Earth Intelligence

Pixxel operates what it describes as the world’s highest-resolution commercial hyperspectral imaging constellation. With six commercial satellites in orbit, its data is designed to support decision-making across agriculture, energy, mining and environmental applications.

The value of hyperspectral imagery lies in what happens beyond simply taking a picture. Different materials interact with light in different ways, creating spectral signatures that can reveal information about vegetation health, mineral composition, environmental changes and other physical characteristics.

That makes satellite data potentially useful not just for observing what is happening on Earth, but for helping organisations understand why it is happening.

Building More Than a Satellite Company

Pixxel is now expanding beyond the hardware that initially defined the company.

Its Aurora Earth intelligence software platform is designed to help organisations analyse and extract insights from satellite data. At the same time, Pixxel is developing satellite systems for commercial customers and government space programmes.

The company’s evolution is significant because it is moving across multiple layers of the space-data value chain: sensors, satellites, software and intelligence.

Pixxel now describes this broader ambition as building “planetary infrastructure”, connecting multiple sensing technologies and satellite systems with software capable of turning observations into actionable intelligence. (Pixxel)

A New Generation of Earth Observation

The timing of the investment reflects a larger transformation taking place in the global space industry. Satellites are becoming increasingly capable, while advances in artificial intelligence and data processing are making it possible to extract far more value from the information they collect.

For industries such as agriculture and mining, this can mean moving from periodic observation toward more continuous monitoring. For governments and environmental organisations, richer Earth data can provide another tool for understanding ecosystems, resources and changes taking place across large geographical areas.

Pixxel’s work is also increasingly extending into strategic applications. The company says it has worked with organisations including NASA, the National Reconnaissance Office and the Indian Air Force, while developing sovereign space systems for government customers. (LinkedIn)

Scaling the Vision

The new funding will accelerate Pixxel’s expansion into new sensing technologies, more powerful Earth intelligence software and sovereign space systems.

The company is also expanding its satellite manufacturing capabilities. Its growing infrastructure is intended to allow Pixxel to produce satellites at greater scale while serving both commercial and government requirements. (The Financial Express)

For India, Pixxel’s growth represents more than the rise of another deep-tech startup. It is part of a broader transformation in India’s private space sector, where startups are increasingly moving from experimental missions toward commercially viable space infrastructure.

Seeing More, Knowing More, Acting Faster

Pixxel’s journey illustrates how the opportunity in commercial space is moving beyond rockets and satellites themselves. The larger opportunity may lie in the data generated by those systems and the intelligence that can be built on top of it.

Seven years after two BITS Pilani students began working on an ambitious idea to build a “health monitor for the planet,” Pixxel has evolved into a company building satellites, hyperspectral sensors, software and space systems.

With $100 million in new capital and $195 million raised overall, Ahmed, Khandelwal and the Pixxel team now have the resources to pursue a much larger ambition: building the infrastructure through which governments, businesses and institutions can understand a changing planet.
