How Muhammad Bilal Is Building Jinn Studios, the Muslim World’s First AAA Gaming Universe
A Gap Hidden in Plain Sight
The global gaming industry is valued at over $200 billion, shaping how millions of young people understand mythology, identity, and heroism. Yet within that ecosystem, one of the world’s largest populations—Muslims—has remained almost entirely absent from the highest tier of storytelling.
Muhammad Bilal, Founder and Creative Director of Jinn Studios, sees this not just as a market gap, but as a civilizational one. For decades, global entertainment has normalized Western mythologies, embedding them deeply into the cultural imagination of audiences worldwide. Meanwhile, Islamic narratives—rich in depth, history, and philosophical complexity—have largely remained outside mainstream interactive media.
“1.8 billion Muslims exist without seeing themselves reflected in the highest form of interactive storytelling,” Bilal observes.
Jinn Studios was founded to change that.
From Engineer to World Builder
Bilal’s journey into gaming did not begin in entertainment—it began in engineering.
Raised in Lahore, Pakistan, he studied Electrical and Electronics Engineering before building a global career across Europe and Asia. His work ranged from ERP transformation projects at Pak Suzuki to AI-driven waste management platforms in Belgium, along with consulting and development roles that impacted hundreds of businesses.
Despite this diverse experience, a common thread emerged: the most meaningful work often lies in solving problems others overlook.
“The world is built by people willing to sit alone with a problem nobody else thinks is worth solving,” he says.
That mindset deepened during his time at Draper University in Silicon Valley and later through advanced studies in artificial intelligence and machine learning at the University of Texas at Austin. It was here that Bilal began to think not just about building systems—but about shaping narratives.
The Birth of Jinn Studios
The idea for Jinn Studios came from a simple but powerful realization: Muslim stories were missing from modern gaming at scale.
While global audiences could instantly recognize characters from Norse or Greek mythology, there was little to no representation of Islamic lore, Sufi traditions, or the landscapes of the Muslim world in AAA games.
Bilal saw this absence as both a challenge and an opportunity.
Jinn Studios was launched as the Middle East’s first independent AAA narrative game studio, with a mission to build high-quality, globally competitive games rooted in Islamic storytelling traditions. Its flagship title, The Jinn, is a story-driven action RPG designed for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, combining cinematic gameplay with themes drawn from the unseen, spirituality, and mythology.
Building Credibility Without a Category
One of the most significant challenges Bilal faced was the absence of precedent.
There is no established category for a Muslim heritage AAA game studio. No comparable companies, no historical benchmarks, and no clear investor playbook. Every conversation requires explanation before evaluation.
Rather than attempting to justify the vision through words alone, Bilal chose to demonstrate it through execution.
Within just 60 days of founding, Jinn Studios completed 85% of its vertical slice—an achievement that is highly unusual in AAA game development timelines.
“There’s no playbook for what we’re building,” Bilal explains. “So we had to create our own credibility through production.”
This approach has allowed the studio to move from concept to tangible proof, positioning itself as a serious contender despite operating in an entirely new category.
Beyond a Game: Building a Cultural IP
Jinn Studios is not being built as a single-product company.
Bilal envisions a broader ecosystem that extends beyond gaming into publishing, music, and potentially film and streaming. The goal is to create a unified intellectual property universe that can compete at a global level while remaining rooted in Muslim identity and storytelling traditions.
This ambition reflects a larger shift—from building products to building cultural infrastructure.
For Bilal, the objective is not just commercial success, but narrative ownership. He believes that communities that control their stories ultimately shape their future.
Faith, Identity, and Creative Responsibility
At the core of Bilal’s work is a deeper philosophical motivation.
He views storytelling as one of the most powerful tools in shaping how individuals understand themselves and the world around them. In his view, the Muslim world is currently losing influence not through economic or political means, but through imagination.
“Every time a child knows Thor before they know their own stories, we are losing ground,” he reflects.
Rather than rejecting dominant narratives, Bilal’s approach is to build alternatives that are equally compelling—stories that are immersive, high-quality, and globally relevant.
This perspective also shapes the culture within Jinn Studios, where creative work is approached not just as entertainment, but as responsibility.
Advice to the Next Generation of Founders
Bilal’s advice to young entrepreneurs reflects his own unconventional path.
He emphasizes the importance of starting before feeling ready, building publicly, and allowing clarity to emerge through action. Rather than waiting for validation, he encourages founders to create proof through execution.
“The path only appears after you start walking,” he says.
He also stresses the importance of identity as an advantage rather than a limitation. In a globalized world, he believes that authenticity is what differentiates truly impactful companies.
A Legacy of Representation
As Jinn Studios moves toward full production and global launch, its success will depend on execution, adoption, and market readiness. But beyond metrics, Bilal’s vision is rooted in something more enduring.
He wants to create a world where Muslim children see their own stories represented at the highest level of storytelling—where they no longer have to look elsewhere to find narratives that resonate with their identity.
“I want a generation to grow up seeing their world as legendary,” he says.
If Jinn Studios succeeds, it will not just introduce a new game to the market.
It will redefine who gets to shape imagination—and whose stories are told at scale.
