Saudi Arabia-based water technology startup Flow Guard Solutions has won the 2026 Hult Prize, securing the competition’s $1 million grand prize after emerging from a field of approximately 18,000 teams representing more than 220 universities worldwide.
Founded by Mohammed Ahmed, a graduate of the Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship (TIE) Master’s Program at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), and Omar Khalifa, a Ph.D. student in KAUST’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Program, Flow Guard is tackling one of the world’s most persistent infrastructure problems: water loss.
The startup has developed a smart water monitoring system that combines ultrasonic sensors, NB-IoT connectivity and AI-powered analytics to detect leaks, abnormal consumption patterns and potential infrastructure problems before they become costly failures.
Turning Water Data Into Early Warnings
Water leaks can remain hidden for days, weeks or even months, causing significant property damage and wasting large amounts of water in the process. Traditional monitoring systems may also depend on existing Wi-Fi infrastructure, limiting their usefulness in some buildings and operational environments.
Flow Guard is designed to address these challenges through continuous monitoring. Its ultrasonic smart meters measure water consumption while NB-IoT connectivity enables the system to transmit information without relying on a building’s existing Wi-Fi network.
The company’s platform analyses consumption patterns to identify unusual behaviour that could indicate a leak or infrastructure issue. Building managers and residents can then receive real-time alerts through an integrated dashboard, alongside actionable insights and longer-term consumption trends.
The objective is straightforward: identify problems before they become expensive problems.
From a KAUST Program to a Global Competition
Flow Guard’s journey began within KAUST’s Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship (TIE) Program, an initiative designed to help transform research and technical innovation into market-ready ventures.
Ahmed was part of the inaugural TIE cohort, a 16-month Master’s program focused on preparing students to build and lead technology ventures. The program takes participants through the process of identifying market problems, testing technologies, developing business models and preparing ventures for investment and commercialisation.
Flow Guard subsequently developed through the program’s accelerator pathway and presented its prototype at a KAUST Showcase before entering the Hult Prize competition.
The story demonstrates how university entrepreneurship programs can serve as a bridge between technical research and commercial applications. In Flow Guard’s case, an idea developed within the KAUST ecosystem eventually found itself competing against thousands of student ventures from around the world.
18,000 Teams to One Winner
The 2026 Hult Prize attracted approximately 18,000 teams from more than 220 universities, with national competitions taking place across 40 countries.
Flow Guard first represented KAUST at the Hult Prize Saudi Arabia National Competition, which was established and hosted with support from Monsha’at and Arweqah Alreyadah. The team won the national competition and earned its place on the global stage.
The next challenge was the Hult Prize Virtual Accelerator, where Flow Guard competed among 90 ventures from around the world.
After completing the accelerator, the startup was selected as one of 21 teams invited to the Hult Prize Global Accelerator at Ashridge House in the United Kingdom.
Over three weeks, Ahmed and Khalifa worked alongside the other global finalists, refining their business model, impact strategy and investment proposition. The competition then narrowed the field from 21 teams to just eight finalists, who were given the opportunity to pitch before the final judging panel.
Flow Guard ultimately emerged as the winner, taking home the $1 million prize.
Solving a Problem That Matters to Saudi Arabia
Flow Guard’s mission has particular relevance in Saudi Arabia and other water-stressed regions, where improving the efficiency of water infrastructure is both an environmental necessity and an economic opportunity.
Rather than approaching water conservation solely from the perspective of reducing consumer usage, Flow Guard focuses on the infrastructure itself. Detecting leaks earlier can help property owners reduce damage and operating costs while also preventing unnecessary water loss.
The startup’s combination of hardware, connectivity and AI analytics reflects a broader shift toward intelligent infrastructure, where buildings and utilities can increasingly detect problems autonomously rather than waiting for human intervention.
A Milestone for Saudi Innovation
For KAUST, the achievement provides another example of the potential of its entrepreneurship ecosystem to take technical ideas beyond the laboratory.
For Ahmed and Khalifa, the journey has taken Flow Guard from a prototype developed through the TIE ecosystem to an internationally recognised venture competing against thousands of teams.
And for Saudi Arabia, the victory offers a powerful illustration of the country’s growing presence in technology entrepreneurship.
From 18,000 teams across more than 220 universities to one global winner, Flow Guard’s journey is a remarkable entrepreneurial achievement. More importantly, it highlights how innovation emerging from Saudi Arabia can address challenges that extend far beyond its borders.
